Doctor Who, Torchwood and BSG

This weekend I caught 3 hours of television. No spoilers below, just some quick thoughts.

BATTLESTAR GALACTICA

The first was "He That Believeth in Me," the first episode of the fourth and final season of Battlestar Galactica. I should say that I haaaaaaaaaated the third season of BSG, especially the way they ended it: revealing that four well established characters were, in fact, Cylons. After watching Friday's episode, I still think they have many plot holes large enough to drive a Cylon Basestar through. I am hoping they manage to tie up the major ones by the time they finish. Ron Moore was quoted somewhere saying that the time off during the Writer's Strike gave them a chance to think about the direction of the final season and that they made changes. Hopefully for the better . I have to admit part of me believes that this isn't possible, and I'm tuning in to see just how bad they crash & burn. We'll see, jury is still out. I give this episode a 5 on a scale of 1 to 10.

DOCTOR WHO
Next came the first episode of the 4th Season of Doctor Who. "Partners in Crime," written by Russell T. Davies.

Well. Umm, I'm really looking forward to having Dr. Who back on TV after what seemed like a really long hiatus. Still...I've blogged before what I think about Russell T. Davies. No need to repeat myself there, unfortunately. The return of the Doctor gets an automatic 5 out of 10 from me just by being on, but that's it. Nothing more for this episode, I am really restraining myself from writing another tirade about Davies...

TORCHWOOD
Finally, and this was the best hour of TV I managed to catch, the Season 2 finale of Torchwood. Aptly titled "Exit Wounds," this episode was chock full of major Ass Kickery. James Marsters returns as Captain John, and without revealing any details, this is a major storyline for Captain Jack and crew. Also its probably my Buffy Fanboy stripes showing, but Marsters just ROCKS so maybe that influenced me a bit.

I will be tuning in eagerly for Season 3 to see how they manage with the major changes this storyline wrought upon the team. The first season of this show was good, not great. The second season has been picking up momentum with each episode and building alot more on character, backstory and interesting plotlines. I'm actually looking forward to each episode, and of course, its over (until next year). I give this one 9 out of 10. If they keep Marsters on as a permanent addition to the team (pure hopefulness on my part) I'd give Torchwood a 10/10.

I only managed to catch BSG. That was a waste of an otherwise good hour. On the 1 to 10 scale I think a five is very generous. I would have given it a 4 had I not seen next week's preview, now I am hard pressed to give it a 2.5. Way too many holes, I don't think the season (and series) will end leaving me convinced that much of the twisted storyline was at all plausible.

After all of these years I still can't get into Dr. Who. I never saw the first season of Torchwood and I don't like coming in late. So it looks like I am stuck with BSG.

I never liked Dr. Who until they put it back on the air in 2005. You have to get past the fact that sometimes the show is silly and knows it (for example some of the alien designs are just ridiculous).

Most of the time though, its excellent storytelling and great sci-fi.

One of the things I like about it is there's virtually no technobabble.

The science and technology isn't a character like it always was with Trek. Its there, but it doesn't get in the way.

I have always loved Dr. Who. I started watching it back in the 80's on PBS when the Doctor was that curly haired guy with the long scarf.

The budget for the program was low, but the writing was out of this world, it was a lot like playing D&D, you just had to imagine what this stuff was that they were trying to project.

I still watch Dr. Who on PBS, I just don't watch enough tv to explain spending to much on cable. I have no idea what season that I'm watching now, but on Saturday it was the first show with the new dark haired Dr. where they went to New New York, and I found it mind blowing.

New crazy concepts of science and logic has always been what makes Dr. Who a thrilling show to watch. The new series kind of spooked me because with a huge budget, writers tend to get lazy.

As an old fan, I find it really thrilling when they bring back old characters and villains! I saw in the series preview that they'll have an episode with K-9, AWESOME!!!

Long live the Doctor!!!

-RIP

K-9 already made an appearance in the 2nd season episode, "School Reunion". The same episode that saw the return of Sarah Jane.

If you really dig Dr. Who, you ought to check out this current run...they're doing some good stuff with it.
