Gaiman to write Batman

Neil Gaiman has been tapped to write a two issue arc for Batman and Detective Comics in January 2009. The project is to be called, "Whatever Happened to the Caped Crusader?", an obvious homage to Alan Moore's "Whatever Happened to the Man of Tomorrow?".

Moore's Superman story was intended to close the book on the original character's history in preparation for Crisis on Infinite Earths and DC's Dan DiDio has said choosing a similar title for Gaiman's work is no coincidence. From the Newsarama piece:

Dan DiDio: There are a number of parallels to that. There’s a very particular reason why we call it that, and that information will be coming out later on, but with this, we wanted to get someone of that particular stature to tell this story, a story that will really define the years of Batman’s life.

It will be interesting to see what Gaiman does with Batman.

Andy Kubert will handle the art.

Gaiman writing comics is always a treat. His Sandman comics are an absolute masterpiece of storytelling. The 75 issue run of Sandman wove a rich, fictional tapestry of magic, fantasy, faerie myth and religious dogma that only Gaiman could pull off.

Only Gaiman could write Lucifer as a sympathetic character, one so popular that they'd spin off an entire series for the Fallen Angel (spectacularly written by Mike Carey).
